I've spent 15 years building systems. Shipping products. Debugging things at 2 AM when production is on fire and nobody knows why.

For the last year, I've been deep in AI tools — coding agents, cloud agents, UX design agents, code review agents, you name it. Not evaluating them from a distance. Using them. Daily. On real projects.

I'm not an AI expert. I'm not building foundation models or writing research papers. But I am someone who has used these tools long enough to see their patterns — where they shine, where they break, and what they actually need to work well.

And here's my one take that I don't see enough people talking about:

The smarter AI gets, the more it needs humans. Not less.

Let me explain with an analogy that hit me as an engineer and as a father.

My Son Is Smarter Than I Was at His Age. He Still Needs Me.

This generation of kids is incredible. They have access to everything. They learn faster. They figure things out that took us years to understand.

But here's the thing — my son still gets stuck. Not because he's not smart. Because he doesn't have context. He doesn't know what he doesn't know. He walks into ambiguity and freezes. He makes confident decisions that are completely wrong because he's missing one piece of experience he hasn't lived yet.

Sound familiar?

That's exactly how AI agents behave.

They are fast. They are capable. They can write code, analyze data, generate plans, and execute tasks that would take me hours.

I've seen a coding agent refactor an entire module in minutes. I've watched a code review agent catch bugs I missed. I've used cloud agents to spin up infrastructure that would have taken me a full day to configure manually.

But they still need a parent.

What Does "Parenting AI" Actually Look Like?

When I say AI needs a parent, I don't mean babysitting. I mean the same things a good parent does:

Observation. You don't hover over your kid every second. But you watch. You notice patterns. You catch the moment something is going off track before it becomes a disaster. In production systems, we call this monitoring and observability. With AI agents, it's the same instinct — I've had coding agents confidently generate solutions that looked perfect on the surface but would have caused silent data loss in production. I caught it not because I read every line, but because something felt off. You set up the guardrails, you watch the outputs, you notice when something smells wrong.

Intervention at ambiguity. A smart kid will try to push through uncertainty on their own. Sometimes that works. Sometimes they go deep into a wrong direction and waste hours. A good parent steps in at the right moment — not too early, not too late — and says "have you considered this?" That's the human role with AI agents. The agent will execute confidently. It's your job to know when that confidence is misplaced.

Approval as a feature, not a bottleneck. In engineering, we have code reviews, deployment gates, approval workflows. Nobody calls those "bottlenecks" — they're checkpoints that prevent catastrophe. When an AI agent pauses and asks for human approval, that's not a failure of autonomy. That's good architecture.

Gut-level judgment. This is the one nobody wants to talk about. After 15 years of building and breaking systems, I've developed a sense for when something is about to go wrong. I can't always explain it. It's pattern recognition built from thousands of production incidents, late-night debugging sessions, and projects that failed in ways nobody predicted. AI doesn't have that. It has data. It has probabilities. But it doesn't have the scar tissue that tells you "this feels off, let's pause."

The Real Risk Isn't AI Going Rogue. It's Humans Checking Out.

Here's what actually worries me.

It's not that AI agents will become too powerful. It's that humans will get lazy. We'll see the agent handling things well for weeks, and we'll stop reviewing. We'll skip the approval step. We'll trust the output without reading it.

It's exactly like the parent who stops checking homework because the kid "always gets it right." And then one day, the kid turns in something completely wrong, and nobody caught it.

The most dangerous failure mode isn't an AI that makes mistakes. It's a human who assumes it won't.

Experience Is the Moat

Everyone is talking about AI replacing developers, replacing engineers, replacing knowledge workers.

But here's what I've learned from 15 years in this industry: the hardest part of building software was never writing the code. It was knowing what to build. Knowing when to ship. Knowing when to stop. Knowing when the "technically correct" solution is practically wrong.

That's experience. That's judgment. That's what a parent brings that a child — no matter how brilliant — doesn't have yet.

AI agents are going to get smarter every year. They'll write better code than me. They'll analyze data faster than me. They'll generate solutions I wouldn't have thought of.

And they'll still need someone who has been through enough production fires to know when to say: "Wait. Let's think about this before we proceed."

That someone is you. Don't automate yourself out of that role.

The Bottom Line

The future of AI isn't human vs. machine. It's human with machine — where the human is the experienced parent, and the AI is the brilliant kid who still needs guidance.

If you're a builder, an engineer, a product person — your experience isn't becoming obsolete. It's becoming the most critical layer in the stack.

The agents will do the work. You'll make sure it's the right work.

That's not a limitation of AI. That's how good systems have always worked.
